Donald Trump (First Term)

Donald Trump (First Term)

A businessman and reality television host with no prior political or military experience became president, was impeached twice, and left office amid a global pandemic and the January 6 Capitol attack.

An Unconventional Path to the Presidency

Trump, a real estate developer and television personality, had never held elected office or served in the military before winning the presidency in 2016 — defeating Hillary Clinton while losing the national popular vote but winning the Electoral College, a genuinely unusual background for anyone entering the office directly.

Two Impeachments

Trump was impeached by the House of Representatives twice, becoming the only president in American history to be impeached more than once. The first impeachment, in December 2019, centered on allegations he pressured Ukraine's president to investigate Joe Biden; the Senate acquitted him in February 2020. The second impeachment, in January 2021, charged him with "incitement of insurrection" related to the January 6 Capitol attack; the Senate again acquitted him, this time after he had already left office, short of the two-thirds vote needed to convict.

The COVID-19 Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic began in early 2020 and dominated the final year of Trump's first term. His administration's response included travel restrictions, economic relief legislation (the CARES Act), and Operation Warp Speed, a program that significantly accelerated vaccine development and distribution — while the administration's broader public health response, including messaging around masking and lockdowns, remained a subject of significant public debate throughout.

January 6, 2021

On January 6, 2021, as Congress met to formally certify Joe Biden's election victory, a crowd of Trump's supporters marched to the Capitol and breached the building, disrupting the certification process for several hours before it resumed and completed later that day. This event directly led to Trump's second impeachment, discussed above.

The Mueller Investigation

A special counsel investigation led by Robert Mueller examined Russian interference in the 2016 election and possible coordination with the Trump campaign. The 2019 report found that Russia had interfered in the election, but stated it did not establish that Trump campaign members had conspired or coordinated with the Russian government.
