Tenure is the period or legal status under which a person holds a position or office. For federal judges appointed under Article III, the Constitution provides tenure during good behavior, subject to the constitutional removal process.

Tenure is the period or legal status under which a person holds a position or office. For federal judges appointed under Article III, the Constitution provides tenure during good behavior, subject to the constitutional removal process.

Example: A federal district judge appointed under Article III generally serves during good behavior rather than for a fixed term.

Common misconception: Everyone described as having tenure holds office for life. Tenure rules differ by job, institution, and jurisdiction, and Article III rules do not apply to every public position.
