The majority party is the political party that holds more than half the seats in a legislative chamber. It often has greater influence over leadership selection, committee assignments, and the chamber’s agenda, subject to chamber rules and political circumstances.
Example: After the 2022 elections, Republicans held the majority of seats in the House for the 118th Congress and elected the Speaker.
Common misconception: The majority party can automatically pass any measure. Constitutional requirements, chamber rules, Senate procedures, and divisions within the party can prevent a majority from enacting its preferred legislation.
