A group of individuals, often within a larger political party or organization, united by a common interest or goal that is adverse to the rights of other citizens or the permanent interests of the community.
Example: In Federalist No. 10, James Madison warned against the dangers of factions, arguing that a large, diverse republic is the best way to control their negative effects.
Common misconception: Factions are the same as modern political parties. While political parties can act as factions, Madison defined factions more broadly as any group united by a passion or interest adverse to the rights of others or the public good.
