Voter registration is the process of applying to state election officials to be added to the official list of registered voters. For federal elections, the National Voter Registration Act requires states subject to it to offer registration through motor-vehicle agencies, by mail, and at designated public offices.

Example: The National Voter Registration Act of 1993, often called the Motor Voter Law, requires states to permit residents to register to vote at motor-vehicle agencies.

Common misconception: It is inaccurate to say voter registration is handled by the federal government alone: state law governs how election administrators carry out registration, federal law sets standards, and states may delegate authority to local governments.
