The United States Code is the codification of general and permanent federal statutes, organized by subject into titles. It is prepared and published under congressional authority and is distinct from the Statutes at Large, which publish federal laws as enacted.

Example: Title 18 of the U.S. Code contains federal criminal statutes, while Title 26 contains federal tax law.

Common misconception: The Code contains every provision of every federal law ever enacted. Temporary, special, or non-permanent provisions may not be codified in the same way, so the Statutes at Large may be needed to consult the enacted text.
