Reapportionment is the allocation of the 435 voting seats in the U.S. House of Representatives among the states based on population counts from the decennial census. Redistricting is the separate process of drawing district boundaries within states.
Example: After the 2020 census, Texas gained two House seats in the apportionment, while several states lost or gained seats based on relative population changes.
Common misconception: Reapportionment and redistricting are the same process. Reapportionment determines how many seats each state receives; redistricting determines the geographic boundaries of the districts.
