Executive Order
A presidential directive to executive-branch agencies, usually published in the Federal Register.
Plain-English Meaning
An executive order is a formal presidential instruction to the executive branch. It cannot create power the President does not have, but it can direct how agencies use authority granted by the Constitution or statutes. Executive orders are normally numbered and published in the Federal Register.
