Food and energy programs are among the most widely available forms of help, and among the most under-used.

  • SNAP: apply through your state’s SNAP agency; most states take applications online. An interview is usually required.
  • WIC serves pregnant women, new mothers, infants, and children under five. Local WIC clinics handle enrollment.
  • School meals: families can apply through the school district for free or reduced-price meals at any point in the year.
  • Energy help: LIHEAP helps with heating and cooling bills; 211 can point to the local office.
  • Food banks: Feeding America’s “Find Your Local Food Bank” tool lists pantries by ZIP code.

Help with the paperwork and the logistics, and let the person decide what to apply for.
