Every public housing authority (PHA) is governed by a board of commissioners that meets in public and approves plans, budgets, and policies, including how the local housing voucher program is run.
- Find your PHA through HUD’s public housing agency contact list on hud.gov, or your city or county website.
- Get the meeting schedule and the PHA’s annual plan. PHAs must hold a public hearing on their plans and accept comments.
- Ask specific questions: How long is the voucher waiting list? How many issued vouchers go unused because families can’t find a landlord who will accept them? What’s the maintenance backlog?
- Follow up in writing, and keep a copy of the answers you receive.
